The ceremony

Todd and Julia's wedding ceremony will take place at The Old Church in downtown Portland, Oregon. The ceremony will begin at 1:30pm.

Officiating will be Todd and Julia's pastor from Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Chris Cordes. The organ will be played by his wife, Rachel Cordes.

(Wondering what to do after the ceremony and before the reception? See the schedule page for suggested — and sponsored! — activities.)

Getting to The Old Church

The Old Church is located at 1422 SW 11th Avenue, at the intersection of SW Clay and 11th.

A map of this site and custom driving directions to it can be found both at Google Maps and Yahoo! Maps.

For those staying at downtown hotels (e.g. the Day's Inn or Hotel Mallory), it is probably easiest and fastest to walk to The Old Church. However, the Portland Streetcar does go right by it (stopping at SW Clay and 11th), which may be convenient, depending on timing and the weather. The closest streetcar stop for the Mallory is SW Taylor and 11th, and the closest stop for the Day's Inn is at SW Mill and 6th, almost as far a walk as The Old Church itself.

Guests staying at the Inn @ Northrup Station will find that their accomodations are named after the fact that they are in front of the Streetcar's Northrup Station stop, making the Streetcar a rather convenient way to get to the ceremony.

The Streetcar runs every 13 minutes during the day on weekends, and is free within Fareless Square, which includes the stops closest to the Mallory and Day's Inn (but not the Inn @ Northrup Station).

Parking at The Old Church

We have reserved the parking lot adjacent to The Old Church, just to the southwest on 11th. However, depending on how many people drive, there may not be enough space for everyone. Street parking is relatively abundant and easy in this area, however, and costs $1.25 per hour.

What is The Old Church?

You might be surprised, but The Old Church is an old building that was once a church. No, really.

It was built in 1883, making it one of the oldest buildings in Portland. It has been home to various congregations, but is now unaffiliated with any denomination, serving as a historic site used for various community functions.

We feel obliged to mention that the building was constructed in a "Carpenter Gothic" style, not so much because we know what that means, but because it's mentioned so often on The Old Church Web site. Maybe, as a student of architecture, you are impressed by this factoid. Or perhaps you are picturing a guy dressed in all black, wearing mascara and wielding a hammer. More likely, you neither know what "Carpenter Gothic" is, nor get the joke in the preceding sentence. So it goes.

All silliness aside, The Old Church Web site has a lot more information for those who want to learn more.

The steeple of The Old Church as rendered in halftone dots for no other reason than it seems to be some kind of "design theme" for this site.
